What is Universal Love?
Universal love. It’s a phrase we hear often, but what does it truly mean? How do we find this boundless, all-encompassing love within ourselves and share it with the world?
In this blog, I’ll explore my personal journey to discovering universal love after undergoing a spiritual awakening.
I’ll tell you what I think the highest form of unconditional love is, why it matters, and how we can cultivate more of it in our lives and communities.
Let’s dive in!
About Universal Love
When I talk about “universal love,” people’s eyes tend to glaze over. They think I’m preaching religious mumbo jumbo or new-age psychobabble. Nope, wrong!
See, I’m just talking about love in its purest form. Unconditional love. A love for all people and all life itself. Not because someone earns it or deserves it, but because it flows from the deepest part of us—our soul essence.
Some call it Christ consciousness, Buddha nature, or Atman. The names don’t matter. Underneath it all, we’re talking about an awakened understanding of our shared belonging in this human family.
It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, struggling’ or thriving. Underneath it all, we’re connected. All made of the same cosmic stuff. Deep down in our core, love is all we have!
But society sure doesn’t make it easy to feel that unity, am I right? Turn on the news for 2 seconds, and it’s all fear-mongering polarization and us-against-them drama. It makes you feel powerless and cynical.
Well, opening up to unconditional love is the antidote. And it starts with…
Mastering Self-Love
I know you’ve heard it a million times: You have to love yourself first before you can really love others. But self-love is not just splurging on bath bombs and face masks (though those are super fun, too!).
Real self-love is about nurturing wholeness within yourself. Looking inward, getting vulnerable, and accepting every part of who you are—the good, the bad, and the ugly, too.
Yes, I’m talking about embracing those insecure, messy bits you try to hide. Your regrettable college phase. Your childhood baggage and old wounds. Those dark, fearful voices are in your head. All of it!
When you make peace with your multidimensional, perfectly imperfect self, judgment melts away. You start to see your inherent worthiness. How could God or the universe create anything unworthy of love? It’s just not possible!
You realize we all struggle.
We all wear masks and fight inner demons.
But underneath those costumes, we are radiant, divine love. When you know this love in your bones, honey, you’ll never feel separate from another soul again.
From Romance to Universal Love
Growing up, I thought love was reserved for family and my middle school crushes. Puppy love and honeymoon phases, which inevitably ended in heartbreak! Sound familiar?
But the spiritual awakening blew my mind. It made me see that love can be an unlimited energy flowing through us. Not just something we “fall into” and out of.
You know, romantic love is based on those feel-good brain chemicals and attraction. It comes and goes. But universal love stays constant like the ocean—even when the surface is choppy!
With awakening, I realized love is an interconnected ocean. And we’re all just little waves bobbing around, forgetting we’re water!
These profound moments of oneness strip away separation. Help you access the part of you that is unchanging divine love, waiting to be remembered again. Powerful stuff.
Love in action
When this unconditional love fills you up, kindness and compassion start pouring out effortlessly. You don’t even need to try.
Your natural state becomes one of wanting to help, uplift, and support whoever needs it—friends and strangers alike.
You stop judging others ’cause hurt people hurt people.
Your heart just aches to elevate them.
For me, that meant volunteering more at the animal shelter, donating clothes, and helping neighbors. Before, I was too wrapped up in my own little world of problems to even notice others’ suffering!
But when your eyes shine that love light everywhere equally, you become a vessel of healing. You plant seeds of hope. And you inspire others to access more love, too. Even if you can’t see the ripples, they’re happening.
Embrace the whole world!
Here’s the real litmus test for “universal” love: do you exclude anybody?
It’s easy to send love to people who look, think, and act like you. But unconditional love means embracing the outsider, the foreigner, and the marginalized. Seeing every single human, no matter how different, as worthy of compassion.
It’s tempting to put limits on it—stick to your tribe.
But exclusion is like a little leak in a dam, trickling in separation and judgment. Before you know it, you’ve got a flood!
So, before you catch yourself judging instead of empathizing, pause. Find the hurt under the hate. Send them love instead of building walls. We’re all just walking each other home.
Love heals everything.
Some may call me a hippy-dippy, rose-colored glasses-wearing, kum-ba-yah-singing optimist. And yeah, maybe I am! But I’ve seen firsthand how love heals absolutely everything.
All those generations of inherited hurt, shame, oppression, racism, and brutality—love dissolves those sins of the past. It returns us to who we really are underneath: goodness incarnate.
Some wounds are so big that only radical love can heal them. But love is resilient. It persists like water-smoothing stones. Given enough time and care, love erodes all barriers.
So don’t ever underestimate the power of unconditional love. A smile, a kind word, a helping hand—these small acts of love ripple out in unseen ways.
Keep planting seeds of love through every thought, word, and deed. Nurture forgiveness, empathy, and compassion. Together, we’ll grow more goodness to outshine the darkness. We have to.
Wrapping Up
This is universal love in all its mushy, magnificent wonder. It starts by nurturing self-love and seeing your inherent worthiness.
Then you feel part of the human family, flaws and all. Your heart opens to embrace the forgotten, shunned, and misunderstood. And kindness starts pouring from you unfiltered, like a sweet spring of honey.
I know society likes to scoff at “hippy talk.” But don’t let that discourage you. Lean into it! Choose love with abandon. Let it soften your soul and change how you see this messy, beautiful world.
You have so much love to give. There is so much power to heal. Spread it generously, my dear. Keep flooding the darkness with your light. That’s why you’re here!
